Borja Hernández is assistant professor at the Department of Chemical, Energy and Mechanical Technologies at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. He works in the area of Process Systems Engineering, with a focus in the following topics: 1) Process modeling and scale-up with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Methods (DEM) methods combined with machine learning, 2) Development of compartment models for integrating CFD and DEM information into process control and optimization, 3) Process synthesis, design and assessment under economic and environmental metrics, 4) process optimization with non-linear and mix-integer linear optimization and 5) assessment and optimization of supply chains.
His research career began at the Modeling and Simulation department at the Newcastle Innovation Center of Procter and Gamble. In collaboration with this company, he later carried out his PhD. at University of Salamanca (2020). After his thesis he moved to University of Delaware to work as postdoctoral researcher. Then he was assistant professor at Universidad de Navarra, until he joined Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in 2024. Until 2025, he has published 24 scientific papers. Among them, 14 have been with collaborators with different international institutions and 7 have been in collaboration with the industry (Procter and Gamble, Bioenergy Devco, Mirat Fertilizantes). He has also presented 26 works at international conferences. These works have been supported by his collaboration into 6 projects and being in other 2 principal investigator. He has also contributed to 4 book chapters, he has been part of one project about teaching innovation methodologies and he has supervised 5 BSc. thesis and 3 MSc. thesis. He has also been invited as lecturer at the universities of Guanajuato (Mexico), Tecnológica de Pereira (Colombia) and by the research agency Colifri (Colombia). He has also been reviewer in more than 40 scientific journals (mostly reviewing for Chemical Engineering Science and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research) and in scientific conferences (European Symposium on Computer Aided Engineering, AIChE annual meeting). He is senior member of the American Institution of Chemical Engineering (AIChE) and member of the American Chemistry Society (ACS).
