Processes and products life cycle assessment

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a very useful tool for the evaluation of environmental impacts of products or processes since allow the calculation of mass and energy consumptions and the production of waste emissions from a global point of view. Thus, a LCA study involves the complete life of the product (or process) taking into account from the raw materials to the management of the produced wastes during its use and final disposal. The Chemical and Environmental Engineering Group is now working on LCA studies applied on processes for fuels and bio-fuels production, evaluating their main environmental impacts for possible improvements. These studies are being carried out by means of two specific softwares (Sima Pro and Gabi) by using Ecoinvent as principal database.
