Actualmente es Director del Instituto IMDEA Energía y Catedrático de Ingeniería Química en la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.
Licenciado en Ciencias Químicas con especialización en Química Industrial por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1985). Doctor en Química Industrial por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1990) con premio extraordinario. Ha sido investigador visitante en el Instituto Tecnológico de California (CALTECH, EE.UU., 1991) y en la Universidad de California en Santa Bárbara (UCSB, EE.UU., 2006). Ha sido profesor titular en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1990-1999), trasladándose posteriormente a la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (1999), en la que obtuvo una plaza de catedrático de universidad en el área de Ingeniería Química (2001). En la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos ha desempeñado diversos cargos académicos: Coordinador del Área de Ciencias Ambientales (1999-2001), Vicerrector de Investigación e Innovación Tecnológica (2001-2002) y Director del Departamento de Tecnología Química y Ambiental (2002-2007). En el año 2007 fue nombrado director del Instituto IMDEA Energía, creado en ese momento como un nuevo instituto de I+D por el Gobierno Regional de la "Comunidad de Madrid".
Su actividad docente se ha centrado en las áreas de Ingeniería Química, Ingeniería Ambiental e Ingeniería Energética en los niveles de Grado, Máster y Doctorado. Sus líneas de investigación más relevantes son las siguientes: desarrollo de nuevos materiales zeolíticos y mesoestructurados, síntesis de zeolitas con porosidad jerárquizada, aplicaciones catalíticas de zeolitas en procesos petroquímicos, reacciones de química fina catalizadas por materiales mesoporosos ordenados, reciclado químico de residuos plásticos, producción de biocombustibles avanzados a partir de diferentes tipos de biomasa, producción de hidrógeno libre de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y valorización de CO2.
Ha participado en 73 proyectos de investigación financiados por entidades públicas y privadas, incluyendo un gran número de colaboraciones con el sector industrial. Ha sido Coordinador del proyecto CASCATBEL dentro del Séptimo Programa Marco de la Unión Europea, que contó con la participación de 17 socios y un presupuesto total de 9,3 millones de euros, desarrollándose en el período 2013 - 2017.
Es autor de 224 publicaciones en revistas científicas indexadas y de unas 320 comunicaciones en congresos y reuniones científicas, 5 patentes y 4 libros. Hasta la fecha ha dirigido 23 tesis doctorales. Uno de los libros en los que ha sido coautor es "Feedstock recycling of plastic wastes", publicado en 1999 por la Royal Society of Chemistry. De acuerdo a la base de datos Google Scholar, sus publicaciones científicas han recibido hasta la fecha más de 9300 citas (índice h = 55, índice i10 = 170).
Es miembro del Consejo Asesor del centro de investigación CIESOL (Almería, España) y del Centro Alemán de Investigación en Biomasa (Leipzig, Alemania). Ha participado en el consejo científico de diferentes revistas y conferencias científicas. Ha sido presidente del Comité Organizador de los congresos ISFR2011 e Hypothesis 2015. Actualmente es miembro del Comité Ejecutivo de la SECAT (Sociedad Española de Catálisis) y la FEZA (Federación Europea de Asociaciones de Zeolitas) y es el presidente del GEZ (Grupo Español de Zeolitas).
